As one of the best female vocal groups in the world, Sister Sledge took over dance floors in the 1970s. For fifty years, their music has brought unity and joy. During Pride Week, Kathy Sledge blessed Paradiso with her Sister Sledge LIVE, turning the pop temple into one big disco party, looking for the greatest dancer.
On the day of the performance, there are two versions of Sister Sledge on tour, and lead singer Kathy’s version draws its strength from the group’s irresistible disco rhythms. In a venue filled with thematically dressed disco fans and a big group of dancers, the chemistry was palpable in just under a minute.
The band kicked off strong with ‘Lost in Music’, a fan favorite. The dancers, dressed in black dresses decorated with shiny stones, filled the stage busting out moves straight from of the group’s music videos. It was a celebration of nostalgia for the audience, and when Kathy Sledge finally appeared on stage, a thunderous cheer erupted through Paradiso. The party had officially started.
Carrying a broad smile and powerful voice, Kathy convinced everyone that Sister Sledge still had plenty of talent. During ‘Everybody Dance’ and ‘Got To Love Somebody’, she showcased her full vocal range, supported by the band’s two backup singers. Even a detour to CHIC’s classic ‘Good Times’ was well appreciated by the fans.
Kathy surprised everyone by performing a new song called ‘Promise Me’. “It’s a song I wrote in my 20s that I haven’t performed,” she noted before delivering a beautiful ballad with a stunning guitar solo. It was a nice nod to her solo career aside from the band, where she has scored her own hits.
Nothing beats Sister Sledge however, and by the time ‘He’s The Greatest Dancer’ started, Paradiso’s stage turned into a massive dance floor for over fifteen minutes. Dancers gave out solos and the audience was invited on stage while the band played the infectious rhythm non-stop. Especially during Pride Week, it felt like far more than just a celebration of music.
The celebratory disco train ended with the absolute megahit ‘We Are Family’, having the audience in Paradiso singing along in chorus. Amid loud cheers, the lyrics were chanted while people jumped and danced throughout the venue. Pride Week proved to be the perfect timing for a song that many in the LGBTQ+ community consider their anthem of support and rejoice.
Kathy Sledge brought pure disco music to Amsterdam at just the right moment with her Sister Sledge LIVE. The individual band members might have deserved a bit more attention, but the true goal of the band was to lose yourself in the music and dance all night as one big family.
